The census returns for 1821 were mostly destroyed.
The census itself simply listed the head of the household with the number
of males and females living under that roof. There was also a complicated
system for showing age groups, which we haven't reproduced here. Amongst
surviving records for this period are those for Tong & Westgate
Hill.
