Danubian Celtic CoinageThe Danube area of Pannonia was inhabited by two major celtic
tribes, the Boii to the North and the Scordisci to the south. The
coins in use along the Danube region were in design a copy of Macedonian
Drachmas of King Phillip II. There are variations in the stylization
of the head, some coins being easily recognised and some showing
only a few stylized details. These coins were supposedly issued
by the Boii tribe from what is now southern Hungary.
Most coins found are large bronzes of the "Kugelwange" type. The coinage shows great variation in size, the largest found being 32 mm; the smallest found so far being only 8.5 mm in diameter.
