Unattributed Artefacts

The Unknown

Some of the most beautiful artefacts recovered so far have not yet been attributed. These include a delicate silver filigree pin, found on a Roman site but not of that period. Another find from a Roman site was a white metal buckle set with gold rivets (the one that adorns the home page). A bronze scabbard fragment inlaid with silver designs is also still unidentified.

Pin Description
One side has rows of silver grains, each less than 1 mm in diameter, attached to wound silver wire, which has a diameter of about 0.2 mm. The centre of the round ended head shows a cross; the reverse has lost most of it's grains and has two plates set one above the other, the topmost having a triangular section pointing downwards. The plates have a raised edge and may have held stones. The pin is attached to the head by binding with wire. Badly crushed.
