Subject: Little girl burnt to death.
On Tuesday afternoon, a little girl, aged two-and-a-half years, belonging
to Mr. William Wood, traveller for the firm of Messrs. Hinings, Brook,
and co., drysalters of Lowtown Pudsey, met with her death under the
most painful circumstances:- the mother having occasion to go to a shop
near, left the child in the house alone...and, either from playing with
lights at the fire, or with matches, it's clothes became ignited; it
ran into the parlour, under or near the bed, and set it on fire; and
when the mother returned sonn afterwards, the bed and bedclothes were
in flames. The bedding etc. were dragged into the street, and the little
girl was found in a dreadfully scorched condition. Medical aid was procured
as soon as possible, but no hopes could be given of the child's recovery.
She died the same evening.
