Subject: Gas in Pudsey or not?
This important and oft repeated question, on Wednesday evening
last, was finally decided. A meeting, primarily held in the vestry of
Pudsey Church, and on adjounment, in the Public Room, Lowtown, Pudsey,
took place under the presidency of Mr. W H Greaves. There was a large
attendance.
The chairman, in opening the proceedings. read the bill announcing the
meeting. It was as follows:- Pudsey, June 16, 1868,- To the churchwardens
of the township of Pudsey, in the county of York.- Gentlemen,- We, the
undersigned, being rated inhabitants of that portion of the township
of Pudsey, which is seperate and apart from the Hamlet of Tyersall,
most respectfully require you to call a public meeting of the rated
inhabitants of the above-mentioned portion of this township, to consider
the propriety of adopting the provisions of an act passed in the reign
of his late Majesty King William the fourth, so far as it applies to
lighting up the street with gas, of that portion of this township which
is seperate and apart from the hamlet of Tyersall;- Joshua Lumby, Jno.
Gibson, Joseph Edward Hinings, Benjamin Elsworth, Benjamin Proctor,
David Gaunt, Joshua Greaves, William Bennett, Henry Rayner.
In compliance with the above requisition, the churchwardens, Mr. W H
Greaves and Mr. John Keenan, called the meeting. Mr. Edward Raistrick
moved the adoption of the provisions of the act...Mr. Joseph Edward
Hinings seconded the motion....Mr. John Whitehead, auctioneer, supported
the motion...Mr. Joseph Stansfield spoke for the motion... result, 2
to 1 in favour of adoption. Inspectors elected:- Mr. Samuel Varley,
Stanningley, Mr. W H Greaves, Mr. James Brooks, Mr. J Gibson, Mr. Emanuel
Boocock, Mr. George Hinings, Mr. William Child, Mr. Jno. Huggan and
Mr. Joshua Lamb.
