The Court of the Forest of Knaresborough held on 22 October 1767 dealt out fines to over 500 individuals for "Encroachment". Encroachment onto Crown lands was a widespread problem in the Forest of Knaresborough. The records of fines for the offenders forms a mini-census of the areas affected. within his Castle there on Thursday the twenty second day of October in the seventh year of his Reign and in the
year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Seven Before William Lord Mansfield High Steward

The Customary Tenants within the Forest of Knaresborough aforesaid have chosen Robert PETTY to be Grave and William PARLER to be Bedal for the Forest aforesaid and they are sworn well and faithfully to execute their respective offices aforesaid according to the custom of the Forest aforesaid.
