Most transcribed records for the ancient chapel of Thornthwaite are with the records for St Thomas a Becket Parish Church at Hampsthwaite. The early entries are impossible to differentiate from other entries, though later entries were listed as having being conducted at Thornthwaite Chapel. Baptisms published here date from 1813. The chapel itself dates back to 1240 when built as a chapel of ease. The current building dates from 1812 and is dedicated to St Saviour.
